Comparison

Epoxy flooring vs polished concrete: which is right for your project?

Both finishes can look exceptional. The better choice depends on the existing slab, the design brief and how the space needs to perform.

7 min read

The short version

Choose based on the finished look you want, the condition of the concrete and the practical demands of the space.

The key difference

Polished concrete works with the concrete itself, refining and sealing the existing material. Epoxy and resin systems create a new bonded surface over the prepared substrate, allowing much more control over colour, pattern, movement and texture.

Neither is automatically better. They answer different design and performance briefs.

When epoxy may be the better fit

Resin systems are worth considering when you want a seamless decorative finish, a specific colour direction, metallic movement, a flake texture or a surface that visually transforms an ordinary slab. They can also offer useful protection when specified for the environment.

When polished concrete may suit

Polished concrete can be compelling when the natural character of the slab is part of the design and the existing concrete is suitable for refinement. The final result will reflect what is already in the slab, including variation and aggregate exposure.

Questions that make the decision easier

Think about whether you want a designed surface or an enhanced natural one, how much colour control matters, what level of movement you like and whether the existing slab is capable of delivering the result. A site conversation is more useful than comparing generic images online.

  • What is the existing concrete condition?
  • How much colour and pattern control do you want?
  • Will the area see sunlight, chemicals, vehicles or heavy traffic?
  • How much downtime can the project accommodate?
