Mistakes to avoid
Choosing the cheapest epoxy flooring quote can cost more later
A low number is tempting, especially during a renovation. Learn which parts of a flooring quote are often reduced to create it.
The short version
A fair quote should be competitive and specific. The warning sign is not a low price by itself — it is a low price with no clear explanation.
Where a cheaper quote may be cutting scope
The least visible work is often the easiest to remove from a quote: mechanical preparation, crack repairs, edge detailing, adequate build thickness, protective topcoats and realistic cure time. These omissions may not be obvious on installation day, but they can affect bond, appearance and service life.
The quote should make it possible to compare like with like.
- Preparation reduced to a quick clean.
- Repairs excluded until after the job has started.
- A single coat described as a complete system.
- No allowance for edges, steps or transitions.
- No written cure, care or workmanship information.
The repair bill nobody budgets for
Removing a failed coating is often more disruptive than preparing a slab correctly the first time. It can create dust, additional downtime, waste removal and a second round of repairs before a new system can be installed.
The cheapest initial quote can therefore become the most expensive project outcome.
How a professional quote creates confidence
A considered quote explains the system, preparation, inclusions, exclusions, timing and assumptions. It acknowledges that the slab may reveal conditions once preparation begins and gives you a process for dealing with those conditions.
That detail is not unnecessary paperwork. It is how you understand what you are buying.
Compare the scope before comparing the total
Put each quote side by side and highlight what is included. If one contractor cannot explain why their scope differs, that is useful information. A professional should be able to tell you where the value is and what the trade-offs would be if you changed the specification.
